End The Exploitation of Primates

We envision a world where our closest living relatives live free from human exploitation and cruelty. Will you join us in making our voices heard here and around the world?

Unlike your typical household pets such as dog, cats, or horses, great apes are not domesticated animals. Chimpanzees in particular are extremely social animals whose normal development requires the company of others of their own kind with the freedom to roam. Ideally, all primates should live in the wild. Their natural habitats include species-typical social groups that allow them to learn from their families and have a rich emotional life. Unfortunately, there is an active industry that breeds primates to sell as pets in human homes. To this we say:

  • Stop the breeding and sale of primates as household pets
  • The use of primates in entertainment is harmful and cruel
  • Private ownership of primates is never in the best interest of the animal or the owner
  • Support sanctuaries like FGA that give their residents a chance at life in social groups, outdoor recreation, quality care, and optimal enrichment

With your support, we are able to carry on the fight to end the exploitation of great apes right here in our own backyard.

Speak out about a bill in Congress right now:
The Captive Primate Safety Act

Captive Primate Safety Act: Text – S.4206 – 118th Congress (2023-2024): Captive Primate Safety Act | Congress.gov | Library of Congress

The Captive Primate Safety Act is a piece of legislation that aims to protect nonhuman primates from exploitation and abuse by prohibiting any interstate or foreign commerce involving nonhuman primates for the exotic pet trade, including sale, transportation, and acquisition. It is narrowly crafted to target the commerce in and private possession of primates, and would not impact zoos and other exhibitors, universities, labs, or sanctuaries. It would amend the Lacey Act Amendments of 1981 to achieve these goals.
