MEET THE CHIMPANZEES

CJ (Calamity Jane)

CJ (Calamity Jane) was born on May 2, 1999 at a breeding facility in Texas. She was purchased for $60,000 and kept as a pet in Las Vegas with another chimpanzee named Buddy.

Dressed up in clothing and raised as human children, the two young chimpanzees were a regular attraction at a local swap meet where visitors paid to interact and have photos taken with them.

CJ and Buddy made national headlines in August 2012 when they escaped their backyard enclosure in Las Vegas. Fortunately, CJ was returned to her enclosure unharmed; however, Buddy was not so lucky and was shot and killed by authorities. After CJ escaped again just a few weeks later, it was apparent that an immediate placement at a sanctuary was necessary.

CJ arrived at the sanctuary on August 17, 2012. She made herself at home immediately, becoming fast friends with Maggie, Thiele and Emma and flirting with Jackson, Topo and Herbie. These days we often spot her lounging in one of the aerial tunnels under the canopy of massive trees, grooming one of her family members and enjoying life as a chimpanzee.
