— MEET THE CHIMPANZEES
Emma
Emma, Freedom for Great Apes’ youngest resident, was born on April 15, 2002. We do not have detailed records about Emma’s past, but we do know that she spent the first five years of her life at an animal facility in Texas. In 2006, the Texas facility was temporarily closed. Friends of Animals took over management and oversight of the Texas facility in 2007 and later agreed to secure permanent sanctuary in Bend, Oregon for two of their chimpanzees, Emma and Jackson.
When Emma arrived at the sanctuary she was reserved and didn’t interact much with the other chimpanzees. Now, however, she has made remarkable progress, both socially and psychologically, with the help of her fellow chimpanzees and dedicated caregivers. Most significantly, Emma engages in social grooming – the single most important activity in maintaining social harmony among chimpanzees.
Emma often spends her days nesting on a comfortable bed of blankets. Emma is perhaps the sweetest of all the chimpanzees at the sanctuary, simply being around her is enough to bring a smile to anyone’s face.

Adopt Emma for one year!
By adopting her here at the sanctuary, your one-time donation of $150 or just $12.50 a month for one year gives freedom for Emma to live her best life for years to come at her permanent, forever-home. Your adoption package will include an 8×10 photo of her along with her extensive biography, a certificate of adoption, a subscription to the FGA newsletter, and an invitation to our annual Sanctuary Tour.
Donations toward individual adoptions go to support the entire family of chimpanzees at Freedom for Great Apes.
