— MEET THE CHIMPANZEES
Patti was born on September 11, 1982 at Marine World Africa USA in Vallejo, California. She was raised by humans and trained to perform tricks in front of audiences. Sadly, Patti was forced to perform for 14 years, unlike most entertainment chimpanzees whose “careers” end between the ages of six and eight. Although Marine World collected public donations to fund a retirement home for their animal performers, the facility was never built, and all the older chimpanzees were sold or sent to other facilities. In June of 1996, Patti became the sanctuary’s second rescue and is our second oldest resident.
The matriarch of the group, Patti settles disputes and reassures the others in times of excitement or stress. She is exceptionally smart and flourishes when given enrichment that requires tool use. For the more challenging tasks, Patti is always patient and determined to get those last grapes or peanuts after everyone else has given up.
She is also quite adept at communicating what she wants from the caregivers through her excellent use of body gestures and American Sign Language. Patti is very close with her sister Thiele, and the two are never far apart. She also has a strong bond with Topo and can often be seen grooming him, surrounded by a nest of perfectly crafted blankets.

Adopt Patti for one year!
By adopting her here at the sanctuary, your one-time donation of $150 or just $12.50 a month for one year gives freedom for Patti to live her best life for years to come at her permanent, forever-home. Your adoption package will include an 8×10 photo of her along with her extensive biography, a certificate of adoption, a subscription to the FGA newsletter, and an invitation to our annual Sanctuary Tour.
Donations toward individual adoptions go to support the entire family of chimpanzees at Freedom for Great Apes.
